Improving tracking accuracy
To improve the accuracy of sleep tracking with the Virgin Pulse Max device, it is recommended to use the Max wristband. Although not necessary, it significantly improves tracking accuracy. The device should be securely strapped to either wrist, whichever is most comfortable for sleep. Some movement is required for the device to record a validated sleep session.
Sleep trackers, in general, have been known to make guesstimates about actual sleep times, often measuring inactivity as a surrogate for estimating sleep. Sleep tracking devices with more sensors, capable of recording polysomnography (PSG) data, are expected to be more accurate. PSG data, however, is interpreted by a healthcare professional, and the equipment is often expensive and cumbersome. Commercial trackers are, therefore, a more practical and cost-effective tool for monitoring individual sleep habits. They also provide extra data like heart rate and oxygen levels, and environmental factors like light and temperature.
To ensure accurate tracking, it is important to only use your bed for sleep. Some trackers assume you are trying to sleep if you are lying still in bed, which can skew the results. It is also important to note that sleep trackers are not meant to diagnose sleep disorders, and for exact data about your sleep habits, a medical sleep study is required.
To improve the accuracy of your sleep tracking device, it is recommended to compare different devices and their features. For example, the Apple Watch has been known to provide a general overview of sleep data, while the Pixel Watch 3 has been praised for its accuracy and compact size. The Withings Sleep Analyzer, on the other hand, has been questioned for its accuracy due to its assumptions about sleep. It is best to research and choose a device that suits your specific needs and provides the level of detail you require.

Troubleshooting sleep tracking
If you're having trouble tracking your sleep with the Virgin Pulse Max device, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.
First, ensure that you have pressed the button on the side of the Max device to navigate to the Sleep screen. If you don't see the Sleep screen, your device may need a firmware update to enable sleep tracking. Check out the "How to Perform a Firmware Update" article for instructions on how to do this.
Once you have accessed the Sleep screen, place the Max device into the Max wristband and secure it comfortably on either wrist. While it is not mandatory to use the wristband for sleep tracking, it significantly improves tracking accuracy as it captures your movements during sleep.
Make sure to wear the Max device throughout your entire sleep session. The device requires some movement to validate your sleep session. To start the session, press and hold the button on the side of the device until the screen switches to "SLEEPING".
After you wake up, do not turn off sleep tracking if you plan to go back to sleep. Max does not recognize multiple sleep sessions in a day and will only record the longest session. When you are completely done sleeping, upload your sleep data via USB using the Sync software or wirelessly through the Virgin Pulse mobile application.
If you continue to experience issues with sleep tracking, refer to the Max Device Troubleshooting guides provided by Virgin Pulse for further assistance. These guides can help address specific problems and provide additional solutions.
