The protagonist of the story is Ichabod Crane, a Yankee schoolteacher who lives in Sleepy Hollow. Crane is a superstitious and suggestible man who believes the ghost stories and tales of witchcraft he has heard and read. However, Katrina is also being pursued by the Dutchman Brom Bones, setting up a love triangle.
One night, Crane is riding home from a party at Van Tassel's home when he is suddenly frightened by a headless horseman. The ghost pursues him and hurls a round object that Crane takes to be a head but is later revealed to have been a pumpkin. Crane is never seen in Sleepy Hollow again.
The tale of the headless horseman has been a source of inspiration for artists, illustrators, painters, sculptors, musicians, filmmakers, and advertisers. It is believed that Irving may have been inspired by tales of headless horsemen that date back to the Middle Ages, including stories from the Brothers Grimm and the Dutch and Irish legend of the "Dullahan" or "Gan Ceann". Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" has been adapted into various films and TV shows. The short story was originally included in Irving's 1820 anthology "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent".
The first film adaptation of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was a silent film titled "The Headless Horseman", directed by Edward Venturini and released in 1922. It was filmed on location in New York's Hudson River Valley and starred Will Rogers as Ichabod Crane. This was followed by an animated short film adaptation in 1934, also titled "The Headless Horseman", directed by Ub Iwerks. The short film depicts the headless horseman as a story created by Brom Bones to prank and frighten Ichabod Crane away from Katrina Van Tassel.
