Laura fakes her own death

Laura Burney (Julia Roberts) is trapped in an abusive marriage with her husband, Martin (Patrick Bergin). However, Laura had secretly learned to swim and planned her own "death" to escape Martin's abuse. She swims to shore, returns home, cuts her hair, puts on a wig, and flushes her wedding ring down the toilet. Laura escapes her abusive husband

She also previously moved her mother, Chloe, to an Iowa nursing home, telling Martin that her mother had passed away.
