Carl Lumbly is an American actor known for his roles as the first black superhero on television in M.A.N.T.I.S., and Dick Hallorann in the 2019 horror film Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining. Scatman Crothers in The Shining
Scatman Crothers played Dick Hallorann in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's novel, The Shining. Hallorann is the head chef at the Overlook Hotel in Colorado, who possesses telepathic abilities, which he calls "the shining".
Crothers was a musician and a prolific voiceover artist before he took on the role of Hallorann. He had already proven himself as a versatile performer in movies like Meet Me at the Fair, Hello, Dolly, The Great White Hope, Lady Sings the Blues, Silver Streak, The Shootist, The Cheap Detective, and Mean Dog Blues. He had also appeared in several television series, including Ironside, Mannix, Get Smart, Kojak, and Sanf.
The Shining was Crothers' fourth film with Jack Nicholson, who portrayed Jack Torrance. Crothers and Nicholson were friends, having first met while working on The King of Marvin Gardens. Despite their camaraderie and Crothers' famous sense of humour, the set of The Shining was an intense environment, with Kubrick demanding and exacting. Kubrick was known for his compulsive style, repeating takes multiple times to get the perfect shot. For example, he did 148 takes of the scene in which Hallorann explains "the shining" ability to Danny, and 60 takes of the scene in which the camera slowly zooms in on Crothers in his bedroom.
Crothers won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1981 for his performance as Hallorann, as well as Best Supporting Actor from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Horror. Unfortunately, Crothers died just a few years after The Shining was released, in 1986, at the age of 76.
