To unlock Sleeper Nodes in Destiny 2, you need to obtain Frequency Override keys. These can be created by collecting four Resonance Stems. These stems can be obtained by completing Lost Sectors, defeating VIPs or bosses, completing Public Events, opening loot chests, or playing Escalation Protocols. Once you have a key, you can follow the clues in its item description to find the Sleeper Node it opens. There are 40 Sleeper Nodes in total, and you can unlock them in any order.

What You'll Learn

The number of stems required to get all 40 sleeper nodes
To get all 40 Sleeper Nodes, you will need 172 Override Frequencies on average. This is because the Nodes are determined by RNG (random number generator) and it is possible to get Nodes that you have already received. Therefore, the number of Resonate Stems required is 172 multiplied by 4, which is a total of 688. However, some players may get all 40 Nodes before 172 tries, and some players may take more than 172 tries.
One strategy to get all 40 Nodes without farming thousands of Stems is to only pop Stems in Futurescape Braytech and Olympus Descent. Start at Futurescape until you have all node categories other than Dynamo and Futurescape itself, then switch to Olympus. This is because you only really need to decode nodes in TWO locations, and within 500 Stems, you can obtain all of the following location nodes: Aurora Mindlab, Descent, Drift, and Mindlab.

The best locations to combine stems to get the required nodes
To get the required nodes, you need to combine Resonate Stems to create Override Frequencies. These will give you access to Sleeper Nodes. There are 40 Sleeper Nodes in total, and you will need 15 to get the Sleeper Simulant exotic linear fusion rifle.
There is a lot of RNG involved in getting the required nodes. You can get duplicates, and the Override Frequencies are determined by RNG. It is possible to get nodes that you have already received. The expected number of stems required is 688, but some players may get all 40 nodes before 688, and some may take more.
Some players suggest that certain areas of Mars are connected to certain node activations. For example, one player recommends only combining stems in Futurescape Braytech and Olympus Descent, as they claim that these two locations gave them all the nodes they needed. However, other players disagree with this assessment, stating that the number of stems the player used is in line with what is expected from RNG.
Another player recommends creating Override Frequencies in areas where you have already completed all the nodes, as you won't get a node in the area you are currently in.

The number of stems required to get the Sleeper Simulant
To get the Sleeper Simulant, you need to complete the Violent Intel quest step, which involves opening 15 Sleeper Nodes. Each node requires an Override Frequency, which is made by combining four Resonate Stems. Therefore, you need a total of 60 Resonate Stems to get the Sleeper Simulant.
Resonate Stems can be earned by completing challenges, patrols, public events, and high-value targets on Mars. You can also get them from the Lost Sector in the Futurescape and another in Glacial Drift.

The quest steps to get the Sleeper Simulant
To get the Sleeper Simulant, you will need to complete the following quest steps:
Step 1: Finish the Warmind Campaign
This is easy enough, as the Warmind campaign is only five or so missions long. The last two or so start to get tougher, but once you hit level 30, there’s nothing there that should be all that much of a challenge.
Step 2: Complete Two More Missions for Ana Bray
While the campaign is over, Ana Bray will give you a new pair of missions that will have Rasputin giving you an engram, and then unlocking that engram to reveal an IKELOS hand cannon. These missions are pretty fun, but after this, the grinding begins.
Step 3: Get 300 Hive Kills and 300 Cabal Precision Kills on Mars with the IKELOS Hand Cannon
You will have to get 300 Hive kills and 300 Cabal precision kills on Mars with the IKELOS hand cannon equipped. The gun is actually pretty cool, and has a rampage perk that stacks up to three times for big damage. The problem here is that you’ll need about 600 headshot kills, 300 Hive and 300 Cabal. I recommend doing a pair of lost sectors on repeat, one in the Futurescape, one in the Glacial Drift, as those will be full of Hive and Cabal respectively, which will make this go more quickly than farming random patrol clusters. Hive will take less time than Cabal because Acolytes can be headshot for a kill while Legionnaires usually take two shots. This is easy, just time-consuming.
Step 4: Get 50 Powerful Enemy Kills
Similarly to before, this step simply requires you to have the IKELOS weapon equipped, not being used. Powerful Enemies are any Yellow Bars, Mini-bosses or Bosses, with the quest requiring 50 powerful enemy kills (Mini-bosses and bosses count towards more progress than basic yellow bars). I would personally recommend the following strategy to progress through this step as fast as possible: Head over to the Leviathan Raid (Located in Nessus towards the bottom of the map). The entrance has several Yellow-bar Cabal on either side, I found that using Snipers and Rocket Launchers were great for this step, as you load into each encounter with enough heavy ammo to get kills on these yellow bars, then return to orbit and repeat the process.
Step 5: Complete Five Strikes
Arguably the most simple step of them all, simply complete five strikes - again with the IKELOS weapon equipped. Not nightfalls, you don't need to touch those, just do your everyday basic strikes. I always find Lake of Shadows to be the quickest strike, however, if you're looking to kill two birds with one stone, you can chip away at your Weekly Strike milestone whilst doing this in the Strike playlist.
Step 6: Complete Three Waves of Escalation Protocol and Access 15 Sleeper Nodes
Two parts to this quest step. One is simple, the other one.... not so much. Let's go over the Escalation protocol part first, it's much more self-explanatory. As long as you're above the recommended light level, you shouldn't have too much of a problem clearing EP level 1 by yourself. If there are other people doing it, great. You can just clear level 1 three times, it doesn't matter which stage you're on - any three Escalation protocol level clears will count towards progress for this quest step. Easy.
Now, the 15 Sleeper Nodes. Arguably the grindiest part of this quest, and can be really boring depending on how you go about it. Remember when I got you to complete the first part of Nascent Dawn 1/5? Those resonate stems are going to come in handy now, which you have hopefully been accumulating over time by completing activities on Mars.
Four Resonate Stems can be crafted into an Override Frequency, used to unlock Sleeper Nodes. There are 40 Sleeper Nodes hidden around Mars, with every Override Frequency you receive allocated to one single location. In the description of the item, it will give you a clue to where it is located, however, you can just look for the corresponding Sleeper Node on this website.
You can hold as many Resonate Stems as you like, but only one override frequency at a time. I recommend collecting all 60 resonate stems first (15 Sleeper nodes, 4 resonate stems for each one), then go on a massive hunt for all of your sleeper nodes. Don't worry about duplicates, you could essentially have all of the override frequencies direct you to the same sleeper node and you'd be fine.
Resonate Stems are granted by the following activities:
- Lost Sector Completion - 1 Resonate Stem
- Public Event Completion - 1 Resonate Stem
- Heroic Public Event Completion - 2 Resonate Stem
- Patrol Completion - 1 Resonate Stem
Step 7: Complete a 360 Light Level Version of Will of the Thousands
Make sure you equip the IKELOS HC, it is again a prerequisite for completing the quest step. Do this with a fireteam if you're struggling, although you shouldn't have too many problems.
Step 8: Return to Ana Bray for Your Reward
You did it, Guardian. Collect your shiny prize, the Sleeper Simulant. Have a rest now, you've earned it!
