Guardians are the first faction of undead beings in the Destiny series, and they serve as protectors of the Last City and the Solar System. They are Lightbearers, who cannot recall their past lives and are effectively immortal, thanks to their Ghosts. But do these Guardians need to sleep, eat, and drink? While it is not explicitly mentioned in the game, some clues suggest that they might. For example, Cayde's ramen obsession indicates that they eat, and a Vanguard class item's lore mentions Guardians drinking at a bar. Additionally, Hunters suffer from insomnia, implying that they do sleep. However, a Warlock ego talon bond states that Guardians don't need sleep. So, do Guardians need sleep, and if so, where do they sleep? Do they have personal quarters in the Tower or the Last City? These are intriguing questions that spark discussion among players.

What You'll Learn

Guardians can still feel pain
Guardians can also get drunk, as mentioned several times in the lore. Hawkmoon's text describes the Crow getting so drunk he can hardly stand.
Guardians can still feel hunger, and they do need to eat. Sloane stated that while she was trying to survive on Titan, Asha helped her find food and watched over her as she slept. Drifter's Ghost also implies that he can help fix starvation.
Guardians can also feel exhaustion and tiredness, and they do need to sleep. In the Ego Talon Bond for the warlock, it is stated that “You will find the nightmares grow worse. Thankfully, you no longer have need of sleep.” This implies that Guardians can feel tired, and can sleep if they want to, but it’s not necessary for survival.
Guardians can also get sick, but they are seemingly immune to conventional bacterial or viral infections, as Ghost once said during the Lake of Shadows strike, "...good thing we can't get tetanus!". However, this doesn't seem to prevent Guardians from carrying diseases, according to some Corsair dialogue in the Vestian Outpost.

Guardians can't get sick
Guardians are seemingly immune to conventional bacterial or viral infections, as a Ghost once remarked during the Lake of Shadows strike: "...good thing we can't get tetanus!". However, this doesn't prevent Guardians from carrying diseases, as evidenced by some Corsair dialogue in the Vestian Outpost back in D1: "who knows what diseases these outsiders are carrying."
Guardians may be physically immune to disease, but germs can still hitch a ride on objects or surfaces. It's speculated that transmats serve a dual purpose: transportation and sanitisation. However, this doesn't work for everything. For example, in the Season of the Haunted, there was a small decontamination chamber between the containment area for the Crown of Sorrow and the rest of the HELM. Even then, it didn't stop the Egregore spores from finding their way to the rest of the ship.
It's possible that the only conditions which can now affect Guardians are paracausal in nature, like being Taken, as seen with Commander Sloane. However, her Ghost is keeping her from becoming completely Taken. So, it's safe to say that Guardians can't become ill in the mundane physical sense.
Guardians do, however, present with physical symptoms of underlying mental health issues, which their Ghosts seem unable to fix. Conditions of a mental or emotional nature make sense, given what Guardians do on a regular basis. This is further evidenced by the existence of entire ad campaigns for prescription drugs that target Guardians, courtesy of the Jade Rabbit lore tab.
In conclusion, while Guardians don't seem to get sick in the traditional sense, they can still experience physical symptoms of mental health issues and carry diseases without being affected by them.

Guardians can get drunk
Guardians can indeed get drunk. In the Hawkmoon lore tab, it is described how the Young Wolf got drunk with Crow. There are also several other references to Guardians drinking alcohol, such as in the lore tab One Exile to Another, where Crow says:
> "I wish I still had the bottle from that Warlock. I've never been drunk before—that I recall, anyway."
In the lore tab Turn, Cayde and Andal Brask drink together, but Cayde, being an Exo, does not get drunk. However, Exos can experience almost everything a human can, and it is theorised that they can get drunk or at least act like they are. In the lore tab Loose Ends, Drifter's ghost brought him back to life after he died of starvation, but he was still hungry. It is therefore likely that a Ghost could sober a Guardian up if they were drunk.
Guardians are still mostly human, and therefore need to eat, drink, and sleep. However, their Ghosts can cure them of starvation, and it is likely the same with sleep deprivation. Ghosts can also heal Guardians of injuries, such as broken legs, and can cure them of diseases. However, Ghosts cannot heal Guardians of mental health issues.

Ghosts can cure starvation
Drifter's Ghost offered to fix his starvation, but Drifter refused, choosing starvation over his Ghost's help. Drifter's Ghost performed a full reset, healing Drifter's starvation and allowing him to sit up and take an even breath. However, Drifter was still hungry. Katabasis, stuck on the Glykon, also experienced starvation and chose to stay dead until help arrived so he didn't have to endure hunger pains and eventual starvation.
Guardians can die from starvation, just like regular humans, but their Ghosts can bring them back to life in peak condition. Ghosts can heal starvation and the ongoing effects of starvation, but they cannot remove the feeling of hunger.

Guardians can die of exhaustion
Guardians are effectively immortal, but they can be permanently killed if their Light is drained by a powerful enemy, or if their Ghost is destroyed. However, they can also die of exhaustion.
Guardians are still mostly human, and as such, they can feel tired and can sleep if they want to, but it is not necessary for their survival. This is because their Ghosts can cure exhaustion, but some Guardians choose not to rely on their Ghosts for this. For example, Drifter, who starved to death over and over during the Dark Ages, refused to let his Ghost cure his hunger.
Guardians can also die from other human needs, such as thirst, and be resurrected by their Ghosts. However, they will still feel thirsty after being resurrected.
Exos, on the other hand, do not need to sleep, eat, drink, or breathe, but they will still do these things to avoid dissociating from their robot bodies and going crazy.
